Vitamin C - An essential element for a healthy life

Vitamins are essential to the health of our bodies, assisting in a range of different functions from healthy bones and blood to eyesight. Vitamin C is probably one of the best known of the vitamins and is needed for an incredible 300 metabolic functions.

Although some of the health benefits associated with this particular vitamin are well known – its antioxidant properties for example – there are also a lot of perhaps not quite so well known attributes that can also contribute to a person’s health and general well-being.

It is a good all rounder, protecting lipids from oxidative damage, supporting collagen formation and non-haem iron absorption, as well as supporting the function of the immune and nervous systems.

Most of the Vitamin C we need can be found in the food we eat: citrus fruits and vegetables like broccoli and kale are just some of the natural sources that contain it.

This vitamin is water soluble (rather than fat soluble as some other vitamins are) which means it can dissolve in water. This is particularly useful for those who do not like or are unable to take vitamins in their natural form, as the diet can be supplemented with effervescent tablets for example, to protect against a deficiency.

If a person should choose to take the vitamin in this form, then combining it with clean and filtered water may be an ideal choice. Filtered water has less of the additives and impurities of tap water, making it purer and easier for the body to process than chlorinated water.
