Article: Chlorinated Tap Water
"Most people never give it a thought. After all, our elected public officials keep assuring us that chlorinated city tap water is completely safe for human consumption." - Dr Zoltan P. Rona, MD MSc
No Standards in Australia!
It may surprise you to learn that at present there are no legally binding standards in Australia for drinking water. Australia is one of the few countries in the Western world which does not have a legal definition of pure water!
Why is this allowed?

Did You Know...?
-
A human being is 70% water and most of the food we eat contains 70-90% water.
-
Water is found throughout the body, both inside and outside our cells.
-
Water is the key to all body functions.
-
90% of our blood is water and all body fluids contain water.
-
It is the water that carries nourishment to all living cells.
-
Nourishment for body cells and waste products of metabolism are transported in water.
-
Under normal conditions, a person needs 1.5 - 2.5 litres, or 8 glassfuls, of water per day.
As it is the key to all bodily functions, water is our most important nourishment and fundamental for good health. Water adjusts the body's temperature and, through urination and perspiration, is the main way to rid the body of toxins.
A slight 3 - 5% decrease of water in the body can lead to light-headedness, headaches, dizziness and nausea. In fact, when you're dehydrated by just 4.3 percent, your performance drops by 22%. A 7% decrease can lead to hallucinations or worse, major organ stress.
Dehydration also raises the body's core temperature, which can lead to heat stroke or in extreme cases, death. The solution, of course, is to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water.
The quality of drinking water, which has surface water as its source, is steadily deteriorating because of pollutants and acid rain. Even water is becoming acidic.
How Much Good Water Should You Drink a Day?
Experts rank water 2nd only to oxygen as essential for life. A person can live for only a few days without it. Water is the most abundant substance on the earth and in the body. It makes up 60-75% of body weight and is important in numerous bodily processes and functions.
Used in the blood to transport nutrients, oxygen and glucose to all parts of the body, water also carries wastes to the kidneys for elimination from the body. It aids in digestion and relieves constipation. Water is a joint lubricant and cushion for organs. It lowers body temperature through perspiration. Water improves skin texture and is useful in preventing urinary tract infections and kidney stones.
Because of its importance in the body, experts recommend that every adult consume at least eight 8 glasses of water every day. Depending on body size and physical activity, men and women may need to drink even more than that to meet their bodies' needs. Every person loses approximately 2.5 liters of water per day through urination, perspiration, respiration and bowel movements. Very few people replenish this loss.
Tips for monitoring water intake:
-
Take water breaks instead of coffee breaks
-
Choose decaffeinated coffee and tea
-
Drink two cups of water 2-2 ½ hours before scheduled physical activity and again 15 minutes before the activity, ½ cup of water every 15 minutes during activity and then 2 cups per pound of water weight lost during the exercise session
-
keep a water bottle or cup with you at your desk throughout the day.
